100x450 - 37 - a life is worth fifty feet

Every second of every minute of every hour counts. I was driving to see her when all of the cars ahead of me stopped without warning and I saw then that my life was worth about fifty feet: the amount of distance between the front of my car and back of the next car before everything came to a screeching halt.
For a while all I could smell was burnt tire rubber.
I thought maybe two years from now if we still knew each other I'd die for her, but not like this, on a crowded highway, surrounded by strangers.
