At night, for fun, we rappel down the sides of skyscrapers. At first it was just the two of us, in love, and insane. It was a whim, it was a dare; it was breathless infatuation. "What if?" And then catalogs, credit card purchases, building plans, and measurements; we were inspired in equal amounts by action movies and our heartbeats in syncopation.
Others heard about it and asked to go along. We thought, "Why not?" It was the worst thing we could have done to each other. There are two things that lovers should keep for themselves: sex and skyscrapers.
