100x450 - 18 - here is a great deep canyon

I listened to her fall asleep. Inhale, pause, exhale. Inhale, pause, exhale. Inhale, pause, pause, pause, exhale. I wondered if she was dreaming yet. I felt the rise and fall of her upper torso against the cold skin of my back. The extrusions of her spine fit neatly against mine like the teeth of a zipper. Inhale, pause, exhale. I turned around and learned the topography of her back as if reading Braille. I memorized blemishes, bumps, indentations, curves, and textures with my fingertips.

Inhale, pause, exhale. We had forgotten about the cigarettes because here is a great, deep canyon.
